Greatest Kiwi Of All Time: No. 76 - Sir Te Rangi Hīroa (Down 5 from 76 last year)

The man with two names. Peter Henry Buck … aka Te Rangi Hīroa.

Born in Taranaki in 1877, Peter for most of his life believed that Ngārongo-ki-tua was his mum.  She had married Peter's father, William Buck, at Urenui, in the early 1870s.

But their marriage was childless and, in accordance with Māori custom, a relative, Rina, came into the household to provide William with a child. Rina died soon after Peter was born so he was nurtured by Ngārongo. Peter - by then Te Rangi Hiroa - was the first Māori medical grad from a New Zealand University.

Te Rangi Hiroa - Sir Peter Buck - graduated in 1904 in medicine and later received an MD in 1910, his doctoral thesis being ‘Medicine amongst the Māori, in ancient and modern times’.

Te Rangi Hiroa is reverently remembered as a great son of Taranaki, and a leader and doctor among his people; a man who used his medical training to stem the tide of profound and serious health problems that almost wiped out the Māori population in the first part of the twentieth century.

Te Rangi Hiroa - Sir Peter Buck - our first Māori medical graduate from a New Zealand University and one of Today FM’s Greatest Kiwis of all Time.
