100 | Ben Stokes - Greatest Kiwi of All Time 2023

He’s the kiwi, that broke the heart of kiwis back in 2019

Benjamin Andrew Stokes. The main reason why New Zealand have still never won an ODI Cricket World Cup.

Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, Stokes has become a household name around the world for his legendary status in the English cricket team. None more legendary than his solo performance vs the BLACKCAPS at Lords in July 2019.

When England’s batting lineup crumbled, Stokes took it upon himself to resurrect the innings. What followed was single-handedly one of the best innings in one-day cricket.

He scored 84*, including 2 sixes in the final over, to tie the game. He then returned for the super over with Jos Buttler, which again was a tie, but as all BLACKCAP fans will remember, England won the match on the boundary countback rule then in place. For this performance, he was named man of the match for the second time in the tournament and will forever be remembered as the kiwi that broke the hearts of his own.

Stokes was born on the 4th of June 1991 in Christchurch. He is the son of rugby league player and coach Gerard Stokes and Deb Stokes. Stokes moved to England at the age of 12 after his father was appointed head coach of Workington Town rugby league club, and grew up in the small West Cumbrian town of Cockermouth, attending Cockermouth School and playing cricket for Cockermouth Cricket Club. His parents subsequently moved back to New Zealand to reside again in Christchurch, leaving Ben in the UK to follow his dreams of representing England.

Stokes’ career has however had its bumps along the way. Following the third ODI against West Indies at Bristol in September 2017, Stokes was arrested after becoming involved in a street brawl near a nightclub with two men.

This incident led to him missing the fourth game of the series and sustaining a hand injury in the brawl.

But since then, Ben Stokes has emerged as one of the most talented and liked all-rounders in world cricket. He now captains England in Test Matches under former BLACKCAP Brendan McCullum and has had a phenomenal start doing so.

A fierce competitor. A popular cricketer and a born and raised New Zealander. Ben Stokes is one of the Greatest Kiwis of all time!
