Greatest Kiwi Of All Time: No. 96 - Helen Clark (Down 69 from 27 last year)

The daughter of a Waikato farmer father and a primary school teacher mum, Helen Clark was the 37th Prime Minister of New Zealand.

She’s the first elected PM of our country, serving an impressive 3 terms. In holding the position of administrator for the United Nations Development Programme in New York Helen became the third highest-ranking official at the UN.

Before she got into politics, she taught at Auckland University where she met future husband Peter - who famously threw Helen under the bus for heating up cups of tea in the microwave.

Forbes ranked Clark among the world’s 25 most influential women.

A movie was made about her called My Year with Helen - released in 2017 which gave a glimpse into her life, including her very special connection to her Dad.

Helen famously said in the year 2000 when she was PM “A nation can be rich in every material sense, but if it fails to provide for and nurture creative expression, it is impoverished in immeasurable ways.”

Two decades on, she recently spoke on her love of the arts.

Gender equity and sustainable development are also huge issues for Helen and she is highly engaged in women’s leadership, climate action, health and drug policy, open government, peace and justice.

She was a close adviser to PM Jacinda Ardern and one of Today FM’s Greatest Kiwis of All Time.
