Duncan Garner: Self-serving big swinging dick and his many 'maaates'

Opinion: Chris Hipkins had run out of excuses, defences and patience with Stuart Nash. This was an easy sacking.

In fact, Nash has broken the one rule that really counts - don't leak Cabinet discussions.

But worse Nash went a few steps further, leaking seriously privileged information, it was detailed insider insight and information only a select few people had and it went to his mates, not just any old mates but to his well-heeled donors, who are businessmen in their own right who, suddenly, had top secret information from the top table in the land.

Why was he doing it? Was he just being a big noter to his mates and donors? Likely, yes. But it's a rookie mistake and Nash is no newbie.

Was Nash gaining financially or did it secure him another year's worth of donations? Which is likely the same thing - so perhaps he did stand to benefit in some way from the leaked information. How then did the donors benefit by having information no one else had? And how many times has Nash used information like this?

Every piece of work and all the appointments he made as a Minister must now be scrutinised by an independent inquiry, perhaps overseen by the Auditor-General so as to give the PM and public confidence there is nothing more to this. Only an independent inquiry can do this and if it has to go to the NZ police so be it.

We like to think corruption is not here but we are dreaming to say it's not. What Nash did amounts to a form of corruption.

PM Hipkins had to dump Nash as a Minister for not just blatantly breaking crucial Cabinet rules but Nash appeared in recent months to lose his way, to be cockier than usual, to be far too casual and matey with his supposed boys club, whether that be the Police Commissioner or donors.

Simply put, Nash had become a dick-swinging political liability or for a shorter version, a political idiot. His credibility is in tatters and he should resign completely as an MP and walk away now. No hanging on to get more taxpayers' dollars - bugger that, man up, own it - show us what accountability looks like and head into the wilderness. Game over Stuart.
