From health scare to Dairy NZ board hopeful: Jason Herrick’s journey of transformation

Rural communities across New Zealand are buzzing with inspiration and admiration as they follow the remarkable transformation of Southland dairy farmer Jason Herrick.

This journey isn't about farming innovation or new technologies but about one man's personal struggle and his commitment to turn his life around.

Following a series of heart scares, Jason decided it was time to make a significant change in his lifestyle. He told REX host Dominic George, he has lost a staggering 59 kgs since 2020.

Adopting a 'RAW' regimen of real food, accountability, and walking, Jason shed more than just weight, he gained a fresh perspective on physical and mental well-being.

“The fact I want to stay above ground... was the final straw for me. I've had five heart scares so far. That sort of brings life into perspective when shit like that happens," Jason revealed.

One key component of his journey was the support of a coach who helped him establish healthy habits and better choices. Jason firmly believes that mental health and physical health go hand in hand, and it's this perspective that has guided his transformation.

His journey didn't stop at personal health. Herrick also shared his ambitions for the Dairy NZ board, with previous experience in governance roles across various boards and community organizations. He champions a bottom-up approach, believing that industry bodies like Dairy NZ need to reconnect with their grassroots.

"These organisations need to be led and directed by the people that fund them, which is the farmers and the grassroots farmers, and that's what I would like to change as a director going forward," Jason asserted.

As Jason candidly shared his insights on farming, governance, and health, he offered inspiration not just for farmers but anyone looking to make a change in their lives.

His resilience and commitment to health and farming offer a fresh and engaging perspective that encourages us all to take a closer look at our own lives.

Jason’s story serves as a poignant reminder that change is possible, whether it's in our personal lives, our work, or the industries we're a part of.

With determination, resilience, and a willingness to adopt new perspectives, we can all embark on our own transformation journey.
