Dying woman granted final wish to reunite with childhood horse

In a heartwarming display of compassion and dedication, a 79-year-old woman on hospice, Karina Courtmanche, had her final wish granted - the opportunity to see her cherished horse one last time.

The beloved horse, Bella, resides on a serene farm in Bethany, Connecticut, where they have shared a profound bond for over three decades.

As Courtmanche's time in hospice care drew near its end, her caretakers became aware of her heartfelt desire. Michelle Walker, RN Case Manager for Connecticut Hospice, spoke with Courtmanche and discovered her deep longing to be reunited with Bella.

Determined to fulfil this poignant request, Walker collaborated with the nursing home and arranged a meticulous plan to transport Courtmanche to the farm, ensuring her comfort and well-being throughout the journey.

The logistics involved an ambulance ride, allowing Courtmanche to remain on a stretcher and receive the necessary care during transit. The dedicated teams involved skillfully coordinated the entire operation, driven by their shared commitment to making Courtmanche's final wish a reality.

Upon arrival at the farm, Courtmanche's long-awaited reunion with Bella transpired, igniting a wave of joy and emotion. With tender affection, she caressed Bella's nose and delighted in feeding her a carrot, cherishing every precious moment together.

The significance of this encounter was not lost on Walker, who expressed her own excitement and gratitude for being able to grant Courtmanche's final wish. She underscored the immense importance of this experience to Courtmanche and the entire team who worked tirelessly to make it happen.

Once Courtmanche's journey reaches its end, Bella will continue to receive attentive care at Bittersweet Farm, ensuring that the enduring connection between the woman and her beloved horse is honoured and preserved.
