Masterton shearers, David Gordon and Paerata Abraham, proved their mettle on Saturday as they clinched a resounding victory over Wales in the opening match of the Wools of New Zealand Shearing Series.
The win not only marked a significant lead for the Kiwi pair but also served as redemption for their defeat in Wales last July.
The shearing showdown, held at the Waimarino Shears in Raetihi, saw Gordon and Abraham facing off against Wales' formidable duo, Gethin Lewis and Llyr Jones. Despite a fierce competition involving 20 sheep for each shearer, the New Zealanders emerged victorious, leaving Wales still in search of their first shearing test match win on New Zealand soil.
Reflecting on their triumph, Gordon expressed, "It feels great to bounce back and secure this win, especially after our setback in Wales. This victory sets a positive tone for the series ahead."
The Wools of New Zealand Shearing Series follows an annual home-and-away arrangement, with the upcoming matches scheduled at the Waitomo Caves Sports this Saturday and concluding at the New Zealand Shears in Te Kūiti the weekend after Easter.
For Gordon, the victory at Raetihi was doubly sweet as he also claimed the top spot in the four-man Waimarino Shears Open final. Meanwhile, teammate Chris Dickson, hailing from Raetihi but based in Masterton, secured second place in the final, showcasing the depth of talent within the Abraham Shearing team.
In a tightly contested field, Gordon's triumph saw him fending off renowned competitors such as Stuart Connor and Jack Fagan, further solidifying his status as a formidable force in the shearing world.
In addition to the main event, other shearing enthusiasts made their mark at Raetihi. Forde Alexander from Taumarunui continued his winning streak by adding the Waimarino senior title to his collection, following his recent triumph at the Golden Shears in Masterton.
Blake Mitchell from Pātea emerged victorious in the intermediate final, while Napier's Kaivah Cooper clinched his fifth consecutive win by securing the junior title.
As the series progresses, anticipation builds for the remaining matches, with both teams eager to leave their mark and claim the coveted title.
