Shed Tinder: Heybarn's revolutionary approach to land rental in New Zealand

Heybarn is an innovative, Kiwi company that allows anyone with excess land on their property to rent the space out to other New Zealanders.

Once described as 'Tinder for Sheds', Heybarn Operations Manager Dan Lynch told REX hosts Hamish McKay and Rebecca Greaves it's about Kiwis helping Kiwis.

"It could be a farmer with a shed on his farm that he's not utilising, could be a paddock that they want to achieve something with but haven't got stock or don't want to put stock in, you've got someone like that who can advertise that on our website," he explained.

"You then have other parties, people who are living in town and haven't got space for their boats, motorhomes or furniture, [Heybarn] provides an option to store this stuff at a relatively cheap price."

Lynch said security is a major priority in their operation and that a number of steps are taken to ensure all spaces advertised are secure and safe.

"We put a lot of work into ensuring that prior to anybody coming onto a farm or storage site the person who owns the property knows who they are, what they are coming to do and some background about them and that's all covered off in the website."

Heybarn even conducted a survey of farmers and people with small blocks asking what their main concerns were and security was in fact, one of the top potential worries.

A unique way they have integrated customer security into their operation is in their website, where the location of a property is shown to be within a 10km radius and any customers will only be able to see the exact address once they have made direct contact with the property owner.
