An iron ball, measuring roughly 1.5 metres in diameter, has puzzled Japanese officials and beachgoers alike after it was discovered on Enshu beach, in the Eastern city of Hamamatsu.
Experts used X-ray technology to confirm the object isn't some sort of explosive device, discovering that the sphere is in fact hollow.
Two raised handles on the sphere indicate it can be hooked onto something, potentially suggesting the orangey-brown object is simply a slightly rusty and discoloured buoy that has washed ashore.
Police cordoned the area off to bring bomb and explosive experts and have sent photos to the Japanese self-defence forces and Coast Guard for further examination.
