Golden Shears brings community back together again

The New Zealand shearing community is finally back together, now that Covid is out the gate.

The Golden Shears concluded in Masterton on Saturday night after a two-year hiatus.

World-renowned shearer Rowland Smith achieved the goal he set all season winning his eighth Golden Shears Open shearing title.

Champion Rowland Smith claimed Saturday's victory by more than three points from runner-up Marlborough shearer Angus Moore, despite being only third off the board after a classic race for time honours.

"It's huge getting back into it," said Doug Laing from Shearing Sports NZ.

"There's a marvellous family atmosphere that goes into shearing. It's family teamwork to the max."

The impressive night also saw the women’s title won for the first time by Savannah King of Eketahuna, beating eight-time winner Fiona Healy in the final.
